In 1989, the Ohio General Assembly created 52 solid waste districts.
The Mahoning County commissioners then created a division for reuse and recycling: The Green Team.
The recycling program started in Goshen Township in the early 1990's with Hilda & Ike Spack as coordinators. There was a fenced-in area for the recycle bin located across from the main township garage.
Eventually through grants from the Green Team and support from the township, a three-bay building was built and attached to an existing township building across the lot. Two of the three bays are used for the recycle bins. The remaining bay is for storage of township equipment.
Recycling is well supported, not only by the citizens and businesses of Goshen Township. but surrounding communities also.
Annually a scrap metal-scrap appliance drive is held and toward the end of summer a tire drive and customer appreciation day is held at the Seacrist Road location.
The recycling program pursues grants through out the year that benefits our parks, administration site and various projects.
In September of 2006, a Business Recycling program was begun. A successful application for a grant enabled the
township to purchase a van for this and other township uses. A grant was recently received to expand this program.
Goshen Township Recycling was recognized in 2007 by readers of the Salem News as the Best of the Best award.
